Rina Tomorrow; 3 days until Anime Boston; Poetry Day 1, 2, and 3

I got a little lazy with keeping up with my blog posts, so I'll try to fit in the missing few days in this post.

I've been watching George Carlin stand-up. Not really preparing myself for Anime Boston all that well. I have to clean up a lot still today so maybe I'll put on some anime music while I do that. I have quite a collection. I have all of the Naruto songs. I have all of Ronin Warriors as well. I do have some Sailor Moon and Gravitation, as well as a lot of Bleach.

Anime Boston released their schedule of events. I downloaded it in Guidebook. It allows me to add events to my own personal schedule. So far I've added the guest panels and autograph panels, the Masquerade, 18+ Dating Game, Anime Dating Game, and Cosplay Chess. Those are all the ones I always go to. I think Rina will enjoy them as well. Their guests this year are Caitlin Glass, Carli Mosier, Chris Smith, Christopher Ayres, Greg Ayres, Karen Strassman, Keith Silverstein, Kirk Thornton, Michael Sinterniklaas, and Tom Wayland. That's just their American Voice Acting guests. They also have several Japanese guests as well.

Poetry Day 1:

I wanted to share a site that I was introduced to in my Writers on Writing class. At the beginning of the semester, we were asked to listen to poets reading. Any poet. The teacher provided us with the Audio and Video site at Poets.org. I could have sworn I listened to T.S. Eliot read "The Journey of the Magi." Found it. It was at PoetryArchive.org. It's a beautiful poem and to have heard it read by the poet was amazing. Here's the poem:

by T.S. Eliot

"A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The was deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter."
And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
And running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires gong out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty, and charging high prices.:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.
Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory.
All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we lead all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt. I have seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

I just think it's beautiful.

Poetry Day 2:

In the same class, we were asked to read from Billy Collins's poems. This was my first time reading Billy Collins. I've never really been into poets of the late-20th, early 21st century. His poems aren't bad, but they didn't ring true to me.

There is a poem I'd like to share that I've always loved. I read it in a Brit Lit class. My teacher was incredibly excited about all of the reading, but this is one that stuck with me: Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley. The explication of it just made me feel excited for poetry again. Here's the poem:

"Ozymandias"
by Precy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said--"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Loon on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Poetry Day 3:

There's one more poem I'd like to share today. If you haven't read this poem yet, I suggest you take a moment to do so. It's constantly alluded to. There's even a moment where it's mentioned in the movie Serenity:

The Operative: That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship. She is an albatross, Captain.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Way I remember it, an albatross was a ship's good luck, 'til some idiot killed it. [to Inara] Yes, I've read a poem. Try not to faint.

The imagery has always stuck with me from this poem as well. It's very dark, and I still find it a little scarey.

It's too long to copy the entire thing here, but here's a link to it: "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
